Raising Readers
Nurturing a love for reading is one of the most crucial roles parents can play in their children's lives. It is important to develop a fondness, or at least curiosity, for books at a young age. Parents can encourage their children to see reading as not just a chore or a skill, but a pleasurable activity. The key is to start early. Read aloud to your kids as often as you can: before nap time, during vacant hours, and so on. Let your child help you in reading out a recipe, or ask them to read food labels aloud while grocery shopping. Act out the stories you read together. Another important thing is for parents to understand that these things take time. Be patient, and soon your child will develop a lifelong friendship with books.
